My song of the day is “By the Wire” by Olympics.
Olympics is an absolutely splendid band that has every ingredient required to draw me in like a moth to the flame. Lead singer Kevin Lujan has a keening voice in the same phylum as Morrissey and the guitars have a darkwave urgency reminiscent of Joy Division.
It’s not to say the band is derivative, but when I’m new to an act I always profit from some good reference points. The internet is calling Olympics “a dreamy post-punk” band, but I really don’t know what that label means. I’d call it indie or alt-rock. It’s also sprinkled with some dark shoegaze glitter.
It’s a great band and the thing is they come from Fayetteville, Arkansas, despite sounding like they were incubated in some dreary UK public housing neighborhood. I’ve only heard one song and already I believe in this outfit.
