Some of the most imagery-heavy lyrics around can be found in the miles-deep catalog of the dark-wave/alt-rock British band Siouxsie and the Banshees.
The proof is in the pudding, as they say. To prove my point, all I have to do is point to a few lines from the epic “Dazzle,” off the band’s 1984 album Hyæna.
“Skating bullets on angel dust
in the dead sea of fluid mercury,
baby piano cries under your heavy
index and thumb.
Pull some strings–let them sing.”
–Siouxsie and the Banshees
We’ve got three senses heavily involved in the above passage, sight, feel or texture and sound. The song also awakens the imagination and, who knows, maybe even some form of sixth sense.
Do I know what it means? I don’t and yet I do. It’s all so transcendent.
