“Everyday” by Buddy Holly is one of the sweetest, most intimate pop songs of all time.
I was wondering about the toy-instrument-sounding chimes that make the song seem otherworldly. I looked it up and apparently, the instrument in question is called a celesta, also known as a bell piano.
I also discovered something else I never knew. The distinctive percussion, steady as a metronome and imbued with a quiet momentum, is the result of drummer Jerry Allison slapping his knees. The short, meteoric life of music innovator Buddy Holly is just one of the things I love about America. Other countries have given birth to wonderful musicians., like Django Reinhardt of Belgium and Édith Piaf of France.
But no other nation could have produced Buddy Holly.
I embroidered your name on a banner and mounted it on the highest minaret. Now it’s like my heart, rippling in the breeze for the whole kingdom to see. It glows in the sun, all scarlet and gold.
