There are philosophers everywhere. There’s a prep cook at my work, a 42-year-old guy, who seems to have had a hard life and doesn’t at first blush seem complex. In fact, he’ll put on a TV show or movie on his phone to pass the time while working. While I’m nearby, baking, I’ve been pleasantly distracted so far by several episodes of “Reba” and the audio of the movie “Point Break.”
The other day, I jokingly said to him, “Why does Jesus make us have to work?” (My shift starts very early.)
He said to me, “Adversity is a gift.”
I said, “That’s a great philosophy. Have you always had it?”
He answered, “I haven’t always been this age.” The truth, simplicity and brevity of his words caught me by surprise. Wisdom is everywhere if you’re willing to listen.
