Battlestar Eclectic

Sarah Torribio and her right brain. Music. Musings. Writing. Style.

You’re mad if you think AI could ever create something as authentic as the sweet rasp of Steve Perry singing “Faithfully.”

His message is a naked appeal to someone he loves and is halfway to losing.

The Journey frontman’s octave-straddling voice is geologic in its power and its strata.

Steve Perry has perfect pitch, but prefers to let his voice take a ride and a ramble–a journey, if you will–just to feel the sonic wind in his hair.

At times, his voice cracks as this power-ballad unfolds. The listener goes into a state Emerson described when he wrote, “I become a transparent eyeball.” Thought is gone as we are swept up in a flood of emotions, conjured by Journey’s inexorable dynamics.

As for the subject, it’s relatable. And frankly, it’s romantic. Love is hard. It’s a monster ballad, not a lullaby. And guess what? You think you’re having trouble in your relationship? Try maintaining it while you’re on frickin’ tour!

So yeah, at this fragmented moment, in this world of disconnection and chaos, there’s only one thing I could and should be doing. Listening to “Faithfully” by Journey.
