I love Alkaline Trio and the various offshoot projects of co-frontman Matt Skiba like Heavens and Matt Skiba and the Sekrets.
“Dead End Girl,” of Heavens’ debut album Patent Pending, is a particularly lovely offering. The guitar in this darkwave post-punk offering builds and builds, arguably reaching a dramatic and heart-rending peak at 3 minutes 18 seconds.
But wait, there’s more, as they say in infomercials for ingenious only-sold-on-TV products.
The song extends to further heights, telescoping to angelic choir heights at 3 minutes 45 seconds. I’m not usually so specific, but this song has some luminous highlights.
It’s the moment when Skiba, heartthrob of morbid girls the world over, starts singing the final refrain. With his voice doubled and trebled and the lead guitar spiraling like God’s own music visualizer, the song beckons and beguiles.
