This is one of my favorite songs off The Lion and the Cobra, the 1987 debut album by Sinead O’Connor which is an amazing album, as is her 1990 sophomore album I Do Not Want What I Haven’t Got.
A lot of people only know her cover of Prince’s “Nothing Compares to You” off I Do Not Want. It was emotive and a hit but in many ways a departure from O’Connor’s angry faerie-ring Irish rock style.
I’ve always been annoyed about the backlash against Sinead O’Connor. We want people to be creative, to entertain and inspire us. But the minute the genius edges into eccentricity or instability, it’s like, “Cancel, cancel.” This person is now persona non grata.
I had no idea I was going into a rant defending Sinead O’Connor, shadow boxing while no one is talking trash. But there it is. I stand by her.
