Sarah Torribio and her right brain. Music. Musings. Writing. Style.

‘Neurodivergent’ by Inpatient is a live wire of a song, It’s constantly moving, spiraling, like the overstimulated mind of someone on the wrong side of the spectrum.

There’s a thin, wiry baseline, very post-punk. It moves forward tentatively, as if it knows it’s going to edge into something nasty or spooky. It’s nearly a Bauhaus riff, which is why Inpatient’s genre can be boiled down to something like alt hip-hop.

It’s a wild duet, considering one of the vocalists has a speech impediment, though not as prounced as that of beloved marble-mouth Joey Ramones. The other vocalist san

One of the two vocalists has a speech impediment, though not as pronounced beloved marble-mouth Joey Ramone, The other vocalist sounds damn near like Adam Sandler half the time. I known not which. I just know this new joint is attributed to Ren and Chris Webby.

The delivery of our protagonist as he ponders, “What makes a person neuro-divergent? moves from the sullen twitch of Madness frontman Suggs to the plutonian insanity of Joachin Phoenix going full Joker to all the way to ‘Lose Yourself’-era Eminem.

‘Neuro-divergent’ is aggressive to the point of aggravation, and it works because it gives listeners a glimpse inside of the unquiet mind.

The lyrics track with me–I find them wickedly funny– because I’ve got the ADHD on me and probably a toe on the spectrum., (Don’t worry. It’s just enough to keep me from living up to my potential.)

Check out this flow about our hero’s doctor visit and ddiagnosis.

(Sorry about the curse words. I didn’t write them.)

Yeah, he said I got a touch of the ’tism
Piece of my puzzle is missin’

While the Attention Deficit Disorder tunnels my vision
But see, this world’s an asylum and shit, we all in the system
And our sanity’s the motherfuckin’ cost of admission

By the end of this public disturbance of a song, our titular neuro-divergent has decided to embrace his angst like a super-hero. The guy who they said was broken is now a walking serenity prayer, though it may be more spat than prayed.

Oh, and wait for it, there’s some serious guitar-hero action that comes in out of nowhere when the song should just be finishing and tucking itself into bed. We’re talking Van Halen-esque climbing, warbling notes.
