Virginia tended to avoid Bev. Interactions with her old school friend were tedious. Every conversation was like a watching a one-woman show.

So then I hitchhiked to Des Moines and got a job in a diner.

And that’s where I met my friend Derek, who had been a

session drummer with Deep Purple, and we moved in

right away because we were young and vibing.
