As is often the case, I’m behind the curve, because my current favorite song by them, ‘A Candle’s Fire,’ is from 2011. Never mind, though. I’ll take good tunes when I find them.
The internet tells me Beirut group was originally a solo project by singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Zach Condon, He traveled the world at a young age, taking in all kinds of music.
Anyhow, my song of the day, “A Candle’s Fire by ” swells my heart. Cordon’s voice is preternaturally heart-tugging. Perhaps its his cello-string of a vibrato.
There’s only a few other people like that whose voice make me want to burst into tears the minute they strike a minor chord. Brandon Flowers of the Killers. Jeff Buckley. And though I’ve never cried at a Talking Heads song yet–just give me time–I also for some reason hear a touch of David Byrne in Cordon’s voice.
Yes, this song is currently so filled with pathos for me that I feel like mariachis are stamping on my heart. Maybe it’s all those horns.
