How did I miss the release of this gorgeous song? It slipped under my radar when it came out some 16 years ago I’m swept away and led away by “Thickets” by Patrick Wolf. It’s a chamber-pop fairy tale, both elegy and a call to arms.
Wolf’s voice is a warm warbling one and the flute is Celtic clarion call. Meanwhile, the strings explore a hypnotic riff that puts me in mind of Michael Nyman’s simple, Scottish-rooted soundtrack in “The Piano.”
Wolf, it should be noted, is from London. I’ve already fallen in love with a song of his called “House.” Off his 2009 album The Bachelor, “Thickets” is a new fave. It’s thrilling in its lost-kingdom sadness, and strange in its drama and mystery.
