“Rollercoaster” by Bleachers is a splendid summer joint.
Yes, the song has so many components of charm that it nears manipulation. But then again, discernment is about puling your own marionette songs. For more Bleacher’s fun, watch the amusing “I Want to Get Better” video in which a variety of characters seek psychological help.
Look at all of us pop music aficionados, filled with neurosis and Eros. And according to Bleachers, it’s time to get on the couch or in the tour van. The gorgeous passerby in the convertable brings to mind the scene with the tension stirred up when Clark Griswold spots Christie Brinkley driving by in “Vacation.”
In fact, the song has several throwbacks to the ’80s, stirring nostalgia among the band’s older listeners–us Gen X stragglers who try to move beyond a repertoire of Depeche Mode and Metallica. Easter eggs include the phrase “Killer Queen,” a song by. . .suprise. . . Queen. Teenage Runaway could be seen as an illusion to the 1970s girl-sploitation band that spawned rock giants like Joan Jett and Lita Ford.
You can’t help rooting for bespectacled lead singer Jack Antonoff in this vid. All he wants is a peak experience in which the time spent and the heat generated with a near stranger is like a trip in a rocket, or a careening drive in a reclaimed ice cream truck.
I looked up Bleachers, because I feel at a loss when it comes to categorizing music into genres. According to AI, which pops up unbidden on Google, Bleachers specializes in indie pop, new wave, rock and alt rock. In other words, it’s music for the masses.
