This is the first definition poem in what I think will be a series of definition poems. This latest series was inspired by learning yesterday about a writer named Ambrose Bierce who is famous for his witty or incisive definitions of words.
He spent decades sending them to be printed in newspapers and magazines. Can I get that job, please? Where do I find that job? Anyhow, eventually his definitions–real zingers–were compiled into a compendium ultimately called “The Devil’s Dictionary.”
I have a few writing series I’ve developed over the years. I didn’t do it on purpose. Itjust happened to me.
In the realm of epigrams, I have my “Cowboy Therapist” series. They center on a campfire psychologist with horse-sense and a zen attitude.
I also have my “Doors of Perception” flash fiction series, in find pictures of unusual doors and imagine what lies behind them. And then, straddling the realms of random musing and flash fiction, I have my “Bad Pickup Line.”
I don’t just write short things. I tackle screenplays like my current project, “Airstream Nightmare” and some six other movies in the queue. I edit books. My micro stuff, though–micro-poetry, micro-fiction, random what’ifs–is what come out around the edges. ]
They often come to me unbidden. And sometimes, for days on end, they don’t come to me at all.
