I’m listening to “Mockingjay” by English indie musician Baxter Dury and, by God, there’s something here.
Clever lyrics spat out with a fight-me directness. Dury’s vocal delivery is warm and irritated, if not angry. It’s reminiscent of Johnny Lydon’s confrontational
panache. Dury’s words are framed by a cool mix off polished electronics, providing a dance-beat and a funky angelic choir. This song has size and architecture.
In another note, it turns out lately that the white beards, the geezers, are making noise. What’s old is new, as shown by new releases by Gen X favorites Ash and in the new collaboration between Gorrilaz and venerable alt-rock duo Sparks. (The brothers Sparks put together their cheeky band in 1971.)
