One of the signs of middle-age is you become a self-appointed Guardian of Awesome Songs from Back When Music Was Still Kick-Ass.
Part mentor, part warrior, part evangelist, we speak fiercely to anyone a decade or two or three younger than us who makes the mistake of saying they’re “into music.”
And God forbid a Gen Z kid–are we up to Y? I can’t keep track–tells us they’re interested in exploring some “older music.”
A Gen X-er will play “Plainsong” for their son or youthful co-worker with all the pride of Bilbo Baggins displaying his chain-mail mythril shirt to Frodo. Where Bilbo says reverently, “Made by Elves, you know,” we confide to our prey, “Made by The Cure, you know.”
