Sarah Torribio and her right brain. Music. Musings. Writing. Style.

It was a slow burn but by the time I finished listening to “Lonely Late Nighter” for the first time, I was sold.

This torch song by English singer/songwriter Adrian Borland, best known as frontman for post-punk outfit The Sound, is strumming my pain with its fingers. Accordingly, it lands a spot on my on-repeat list.

I encountered “Lonely Late Nighter,” off an album called Beautiful Ammunition, on the music-sharing site LetsLoop. And, silly me, I thought I was onto a hot new debut.

Turns out the record is from 1994. I guess I missed it amid all the grunge. And now, I just found out Borland committed suicide in 1999. That’s tragic.

As far as me coming late to the musical party, that’s par for the course.

I’m always like Michael Douglas in “Romancing the Stone” coming across an old faded issue of the Rolling Stone and lamenting, “Ah, man! The Doobie Brothers broke up.”
