Remember when people used to be menaced en masse by obscene phone calls?
It was common enough occurrence that obscene phone calls became a trope in TV sitcoms.
Sometimes an obscene caller would simply ring you, then remain wordless when asked, “Who is this?” The only answer? The sound of a stranger on the other end of the line, inhaling and exhaling.
Nowadays, people don’t get obscene phone calls like they did in the ’80s. You rarely hear someone pick up the phone, shake their head, and wryly inform you, “It’s a breather.”
