Battlestar Eclectic

Sarah Torribio and her right brain. Music. Musings. Writing. Style.

Isn’t this a lovely composition by This Mortal Coil? Which, I just learned from Wikipedia, was not a band or even a duo but instead “a British Music Collective” led by music producer Watts-Russell 4AD who owned a record label of the same name.

I knew the band was associated with shoe-gaze, dream pop, romantic, darkwave alt-rock outfit The Cocteau Twins. But I also learned that musicians who took part in group’s productions include members of Dead Can Dance and–unbeknownst to me–the Pixies. That latter information is enough to send me down a music rabbit hole.

The song “A Single Wish” off This Mortal Coil’s debut album “It’ll End in Tears” is melancholy, I’ll admit it. But I love that it’s very nearly an instrumental, and a classical music instrumental at that. And it has a lovely string refrain, I think it’s cello but maybe it’s guitar or synth–help me, musical peeps–that slides and wraps around the music.

I know about this group because I graduated from high school in 1992 and went through a long all-black clothing phase.
