My Mans by Grace Ives is moving and memorable. Her voice and melancholy puts me in mind of Lana del Rey. The song’s production is polished, with keys and beats holding up Ives’ sweet voice like an offering. Her lyrics, though, are the star of the show.
She’s stuck in that vicious cycle we call the dating world, where broken people fill their dance card with the names a series of broken suitors. It’s a tragedy you can see unfolding in any bar, workplace, or home. You can observe sliding into countless text-message situationships.
What makes her story unique is the telling. Her lyrics are confessional poetry with compelling imagery:
“Tell me where I lost my way completely
I’d be his shadow just to have his back
Every single guy I meet completes me
I need a lover who can love right back
And they all just melt away my meaning
I’ll be your candle, but I’ll weep my wax.”
If you need me, I’ll be marinating on that last, unforgettable line: “I’ll be your candle but I’ll weep my wax.”
