The new Morrissey joint is growing on me. There’s that beat, very musically forward. A whisper of electronica. Words poetic and subversive.
Morrissey is in very good voice and, in fact, seems to have gained in lung power. His eccentic keening nears operatic, or at least musical theater, Broadway-bound, when he climbs the octaves to reach the high note at the end of the refrain, “Make-up is a Lie.”
Make-Up Is a Lie is the title track of Morrissey’s upcoming solo album, his 14th according to the Internet.
Morrissey is my hero, has been since I was 15. He’s my favorite person and he’s never even met me. Come to think of it, that sounds like a phrase penned by Moz: “He’s my favorite person, and he’s never even met me.”
Morrissey is releasing new music after a long time in the wilderness. He was recently signed to Sire Records, no less, the very label that signed The Smiths.
The earth is healing.
