Battlestar Eclectic

Sarah Torribio and her right brain. Music. Musings. Writing. Style.

Undeniably pretty electro-prop. Cannons lead singer Michelle Joy has her own voice, soft, a tad breathy, half angst/half disco dance-floor summons. However, and I swear by this, Michelle Joy sometimes bites off the end of a phrase and very nearly hiccups in a way that’s reminiscent of Missing Person’s Dale Bozzio.”

Listen to the phrasing, for instance, when she sings, “I cannot get around” at seconds 22 and 23,” and it’s pure missing persons.

I’m not calling “Starlight” by Cannons derivative. In this cruel world, I refuse to pick apart neo-romantic music reminding us that lonely guitar riffs and hopeful keyboard runs is always in style.

Joy sounds not only sounds a bit like Bozzio but also takes a leaf from Sarah Verperille of Pure Bathing Culture and, for good measure, Charlie xcx. I know, if comparison is the thief of joy, triangulation is the assassin. It puts any singer in a box.

Still, I can reach a verdict. Starlight by Cannons is pleasing. It’s cool, like an Andes Mint. There’s a slight remove to the vocals and that slight echo that comes with wall-of-sound production. Imagine Flock of Seagulls if they tamed their hair and emoted less.
