When I feel too tired to reach for my goals, this song lifts me up. It’s effervescent as champagne and fruity as sangrilla. It’s easy to dismiss this song, “Lights Out” off the 2008 album Santogold as light-weight, given it’s upbeat feel. But along with those dogged bass downstrokes, taut drumming there is a guitar riff that is wonderful.
It hits long about 1 minute, 11 seconds into this video. Anyhow, it’s Smith-jangly, unexpected and transcendent. Johnny Marr, did you secretly show up in the studio? Every note is chosen to elevate the song, swirling round rather the bass rather than mirroring the bass. There’s not a single note lucked that I would anticipate.
On top of that, vocals by Santigold (not to confused with the album’s similar name or the faux-gold that once merited an over-the top infomercial) go down easy as a caramel macchiato on a winter’s morning and cool as a breath mint.
Ladies and gentleman, I give you “Lights Out.”
