I don’t mean this post to be flippant. I’ve had mental health struggles and then some. Whatever doesn’t kill you makes you weirder, right?
However, I had an epiphany a while back. Your so-called fangirls and fanboys are lucky, because no matter how hard things get, they have a source of joy. With this in mind, I say, if you like something, like it hard. Enjoy it.
It might be music. It might be the Marvel Multiverse. It might be cooking. It might be binge-watching a show.
Dive in there. Allow interest and pleasure. Learn something you’re ostensibly too old to learn. Get into something frivolous, even if you’re sure the world is ending. Be the old dude in the mosh pit. Be a Brony. Decorate your room as a shrine to Studio Ghibli. Go to the Renaissance Faire. Learn to style your hair in pin-up style victory rolls. Start that ant farm or alpaca farm.
Don’t be afraid you’re “going manic.” That scary, uncomfortable feeling? It’s happiness and enthusiasm. You can have it safely. And it might just save your life.
