Amber looked great, all brown skin and tan-lines. She wore a white linen dress and espadrilles and smelled like cocoa butter and perfume.

Despite appearances, she was having a dark summer of the soul.

“Happiness should reserve itself for winter,” she wrote in her diary. “It spoils in the heat.”
