There’s a bit of fairydust sprinkled on ‘It’s My Life” by Talk Talk that is reminiscent of Roxy Music. Something in the production reminds me of Brian Eno, or at least his influence. The layers of sound make for an ambiance thick as pea soup and cloaked with mystery.
It’s also hard not to compare Roxy Music with Talk Talk, each with silken-voiced lead singers with a lovelorn vibrato. Doing a bit of Internet sleuthing, I’ve discovered that Talk Talk’s “It’s My Life” was produced not by Brian Eno but by Time Friese-Greene. One more similarity between the two songs is that they both seem to be part of the New Romantic movement that veered–nay, twirled and soared–away from New Wave.
One more note on “It’s My Life,” which is my Song of the Day. The Gwen Stefani cover was more than passable, and I give her kudos for recognizing the potential of a great song. I can’t help thinking, however, when I hear the song, I wish this was the Talk Talk version.
